Organizers of the Mulhako wa Alhomwe has barred the country’s president Lazarus Chakwera to attend this year’s event as they have not invited him.
According to the Chairperson for the group in the Southern Region, Blessings Makwinja the organizers have decided not to invite the President to the event in a bid to save tax payers’ money that could have been used by the President for the event.
Makwinja says it is their conviction that the money which Chakwera would use to the event should be channelled to important things, claiming that the President would use about K53 million if he attended the event at Chonde in Mulanje district.
The group alleges that Chakwera spent K80 million to attend Umntheto of the Ngonis in Mzimba, K67million to attend Umlhangano of the Maseko Ngoni in Ntcheu and K100 million when he attended the Kulamba of the Chewa ceremony in Zambia.
However, some people believe the move is politically motivated.
The event is slated for October, 2, 2022 in Thyolo district.
