CHAKWERA WITH-HOLDS DUTIES FROM VICE PRESIDENT’ OFFICE OVER SATTAR CORRUPTION CASE

President Lazarus Chakwera has confirmed his Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima’s involvement in the Zuneth Sattar’s case.

Addressing the national on Tuesday evening, Chakwera said it is only his vice president who appears on the Sattar corruption list and no one else from his cabinet.

Following that, Chakwera said all duties to do with the office of the Vice President will be withheld pending an investigation Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB).

“As for the Vice President, his office is unique in that the Constitution does not provide for his suspension or removal from it by the President, because he holds that office by the will of Malawian voters, which I respect. As such, the best I can do for now, which is what I have decided to do, is to withhold from his office any delegated duties while waiting for the Bureau to substantiate its allegations against him and to make known its course of action in relation to such,” the Malawi President said.

Among others, the president has also relieved on duty Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga, Board Chairperson of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets John Suzi Banda and also fired Inspector General of Police, George Kainja.

The president noted that the Sattar case is deeply entrenched and it has affected a number of sectors including the Malawi Regulatory Authority (MRA), Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Malawi Defense Force (MDF), Judicial system among others.
