A father in South African has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his 8-month-old daughter by dousing her with paraffin before setting her alight.
According to reports, the 35-year-old Vusumzi Pothelwa in November 2019 poured paraffin on his girlfriend and their daughter while sleeping in a communal toilet.
It is said the woman had led home with the baby because Pothelwa was drunk and was misbehaving.
After Pothelwa poured paraffin on the two, the mother fled to seek help and Pothelwa proceeded to set alight the 8-month-old baby.
Appearing in Western Cape High Court, Judge Constance Nziweni said its unfortunate that the life of the baby was taken away by the very same person who was supposed to be protecting her always.
She added that Pothelwa had lack of guilt, empathy and remorse because he would sometimes laugh and smile during the court proceedings.
She then handed him a life sentence after finding him guilty of all charges of assault, arson, attempted murder and premeditated murder.
