In Mangochi, four men have been arrested for possessing ivory.
Mangochi Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has confirmed the arrest of suspects.
They have been identified as Davie Fungulani, 40 a former policeman of Kandengwe Village, T/A. Nsamala in Balaka and Sharif Makwinja of Jalifu Village, T/A Kawinga in Machinga.
Others are Davie Yakiti from Chimbende Village in T/A Chowe and Mcdad Maziyaya of Mpinganjira Village, T/A Chimwala, all in Mangochi district.
Daudi said they were arrested on the 18th following a tip.
“Mangochi Police detectives were tipped off that some people were offering for sale pieces of elephant ivory at ldrusi Trading Centre in the district.
“With officers from the Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit they followed up the tip and recovered three pieces of raw ivory weighing 36.4kgs, believed to be from Mozambique, which were hidden in a black plastic bag,” said Daudi.
The four will appear in court soon for charges of being found with specimen if endangered species contrary to section 110(b) of the national parks and wildlife Act.
