Police in Mchinji on Wednesday arrested Micheck Tiyago, 30 and Simbireko Amin, 34, both from Mozambique for being found in possession of ivory contrary to section 86 and 91 of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act.

Mchinji Police Spokesperson Maxwell Jailosi said following a tip from well-wishers that the two were in possession of ivory which they were offering for sale.

Officers from Wildlife Investigations Unit and officers from Mchinji Police rushed to Chithumba Trading Center where they managed to apprehend the two foreigners.

Jailosi said the suspects were found with eight cut pieces of suspected ivory weighing 36 kilograms.

Both suspects are in police custody pending analysis of the ivory species by Wildlife Department and court proceedings, according to Jailosi.

Micheck tiyago hails from Mkantha Village, Traditional Authority Konzekani in Chifunde District and Simbireko Amin wabu who comes from Mkantha Village Traditional Authority Konzekani in Chifunde District, both from Mozambique.
