Lilongwe Police has guaranteed safety to its residents in the city following regular attacks perpetrated by street kids in some areas in the country.
A spell of attacks in Blantyre by the street connected children has rocked fear among residents in the capital city, Lilongwe, but Public Relations Officer for the police station, Inspector Hastings Chigalu, says the situation is under control as police have placed strong security measures in the areas.
“We managed to identify their hiding spots, some of them being the Civil Stadium and behind the Lilongwe Bridge, so, we assigned a special police task force that patrols these areas intensively day and night,” said Chigalu in interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA).
However, he highlighted that not all street kids are criminals as some are in the streets merely to beg.
Chigalu said Lilongwe Police has partnered with YONECO and Social Welfare to encourage the innocent street children to report criminal activities around because their reputation is at stake as they are all branded with a criminal image.
Police has since advised the people to avoid moving around town at odd hours and ensure that their items are safely kept; vehicles are locked and most importantly, have police contacts for emergency cases.
