Lilongwe Police Station has arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly stealing a motor vehicle at Lilongwe Golf Club during Lulu’s music show and later crushing it into a ditch after a police follow-up on Sunday, October 23, 2023.
The suspect has been identified as Edward Chiweta, of Fukamapiri Village, Traditional Authority Fukamapiri in Nkhata-Bay.
On Sunday night, Lilongwe Golf Club hosted a music show organized by a local artist who was supported by a Tanzanian singer.
At around 20:00 hours while police were patrolling along Mtunthama Drive, driver of a Mazda Demio, registration number BV 3196 was speeding and unnecessarily overtaking, and he caught the attention of the officers, leading to a hot pursuit.
Worse enough, his failure to comply after police tried to stop him along Haile Selassie road, brought more suspicions, and the law enforcers kept on chasing him.
When he hit Crossroads junction, opposite City Mall, where there is a road construction project, he lost control of the vehicle and fell into a ditch.
Thinking that the suspect was just a road accident victim who needed immediate medical attention, the officers pulled him out from vehicle, but, to the cops’ surprise, the suspect started running away from the scene.
Police tried their best to thwart several of the suspect’s attempts to flee until he was subdued and taken to the station’s traffic office for road traffic accident procedures.
While the man was still in the traffic office, it’s when the cops got the news of a stolen vehicle at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Interestingly, when full details of the said vehicle came to be known, immediately, police turned attention to Chiweta, who upon being questioned, he admitted to have stolen the vehicle at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Edward Chiweta, who was treated as an outpatient at Bwaila District Hospital, has since been charged with the offence of Theft of Motor Vehicle, and will appear in court soon to face law.
