Police in Chiradzulu are keeping in custody a man who was found in possession of fake K5000 notes on Saturday night at Thomas Trading Centre.

Chiradzulu Police Station Public Relations Officer, Innocent Moses has confirmed of the development and identified the culprit as 27-year-old Cosmas wa Thandeka Hastings Mphepo who hails from Kazombe Village in Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu District.

Moses said Mphepo was arrested while drinking at M & M Bottle Store.

“While there, he requested for beer and paid a K5, 000.00 bank note but the bar attendant became suspicious after noting that the note did not have some original features. The matter was reported to police whereby officers rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect,” said Moses.

Police said investigations to verify the note with Reserve Bank of Malawi are underway.

The suspect will appear in court soon after investigations.
