Thyolo Social Welfare Office has recorded 440 pregnancy cases among young girls in the months of April to June, 2022 in the district.

Social Welfare Officer, Tobby Milanzi disclosed this on Wednesday during a Child Protection and Social Welfare quarterly meeting.

child marriages and pregnancies are worrisome in Thyolo

“In the last quarter, we recorded 440 girl pregnancies, 110 child abuse cases, 23 defilement cases, and 99 children were withdrawn from marriages,” he said.

Principal Social Welfare Officer for Thyolo, Derick Mwenda said it is for that reason that the district commemorated this year’s Day of the African Child differently.

“We have noticed that the previous district commemorations had very little patronage of community members which translates to minimal impact. This year, we want to meet communities hence we have committed the whole month of August to community sensitizations which will be done at Group Village Headman level,” he said.

Mwenda said many child abuse cases that are rampant are bordering on poor parenting which is rooted in the culture of the people of Thyolo where parents have no responsibility towards their own children but the uncle’s children.

Nationally, this year, Malawi commemorated Day of the African Child on June 23 under the theme: Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children.
