SEVEN IN COURT OVER K1 BILLION LOOTING AT POLICE HEADQUATERS

Seven accused persons in a case involving the looting of K1 billion at Police Headquarters, have pleaded not guilty to six charges levelled against them.

The six counts they are answering are; forgery of stamps, fraudulent false accounting, conspiracy to defraud, forgery, theft by public servant and money laundering.

It is alleged that the seven were diverting all payments made to Malawi Police Service for security issues to a welfare account and would later withdraw the money instead of channeling it to Government’s account number one.

The case was before Chief Resident Magistrate Madalitso Khoswe Chimwaza in Lilongwe, where the State was to start parading witnesses.

However, the accused persons could only take their pleas.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni says they were ready to parade the witnesses in court today.

Chimwaza has since adjourned the matter to September 22 and 23 to start trial.
