Following a massive protest the ended in his official residency, Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has reportedly fled the country together with his wife and two security officials on a military jet.

According to reports, the President has fled to Maldives, an archipelagic country located in Southern Asia, situated in the Indian Ocean.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the acting President during his absence.

The president went in hiding after protesters stormed his house on Saturday demanding his immediate resignation.

According to BBC, the president will not remain in Maldives for a long time as he plans to move on to a third country as he seeks a safe place to stay.

His brother, Basil Rajapaksa who is the former Finance Minister has also left Sri Lanka for US.
