Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa reportedly fled from his residence after angry protesters stormed his house.
According to reports, the protesters invaded his official residence demanding his resignation for failing to resolve economic issues the country is facing.
Troops had to fire in the air to obstruct the protesters before the president was taken to a safe place.
“The president was escorted to safety. He is still the president, he is being protected by a military unit,” a source said on condition of anonymity.
Minutes after invading the palace, some protesters were seen swimming in the president’s swimming pool while others flocked to the kitchen to cook and eat, NDTV reports.
Prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned an urgent meeting of party leaders to discuss a resolution to the situation.
Sri Lanka facing food and fuel shortages, a runaway inflation, prolonged blackouts among others.
