Police in Ntcheu have arrested two men for allegedly stealing money from a passenger.
Ntcheu Police Public Relations officer, Sub-inspector Rabecca Ndiwate identified the suspects as 22-year-old Gift Mbewe and 38-year old, Sosten Yohane.
According to Ndiwate, the victim, Mike Chezani, boarded a Honda freed vehicle registration number PE 6707 at Chimbiya Trading Centre heading to Blantyre on business errands.
“The victim had cash amounting to K670,000.00 in his laptop bag. To his surprise, upon reaching Tsangano Turn Off, the driver told the victim that they are no longer proceeding to Blantyre, but instead, will be going back to Lilongwe and was ordered to pay K2000 as the transport fare, ” said Ndiwate.
According to the victim, while he was trying to drop off the vehicle, he was surprised to see that all the doors were locked. That’s when one of the suspects protruded to the back seat as trying to help the victim open the door.
“Upon getting off the car, he was surprised to see that his laptop bag containing money was wide open with no money in it.
“He decided to report the issue to Tsangano roadblock where officers followed and managed to seize the vehicle and arrested the suspects, ” Ndiwate continued.
Upon searching the vehicle, recovery of the stolen cash was made.
A panga knife was also found inside the car.
The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of theft which contravenes Section 279 of the Penal Code.
Gift Mbewe hails from Masaula Village in Traditional Authority Chingale in Zomba, while Sosten Yohane, hails from Funsani Village in Traditional Authority Mtukula in Ntcheu.
