TWO ARRESTED FOR ILLEGAL IVORY POSSESSION IN LIWONDE

Two people have arrested by Liwonde police for being found in possession of ivory illegally.

Liwonde Police Spokesperson Ngwashape Msume has confirmed this and identified the two as 34-year-old Mike Chagwa Phiri and Makwanda Jamesome aged 52.

“Police officers and park officials went to the scene at Namikango Village in Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district where they managed to arrest the suspects and recovered the ivory,” says Msume.

The duo are expected to appear before the court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of listed species and dealing in government trophies (Ivory) contrary to sections 86 and 91 of National Parks and Wildlife Act respectively.

Chagwa Phiri comes from Kapoloma Village, Traditional Authority Kapoloma in Machinga District while Makwanda Jameson comes from Chisawa village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi District
