Police have arrested 22 students at St Don Bosco Secondary School at Champhira in Mzimba after they engaged in violent activities following a disagreement with school management over food.
Reports say on Sunday, police arrested the students after they resorted to violence upon being angered by the food that the school served them with.
Following the arrest, other remaining students mobilized themselves and petrol bombed their library and vandalized teachers’ staff room.
Jenda Police Spokesperson Alfred Lucio confirmed the development saying that some students were unhappy with quantities of rice for their lunch which they described it as too little.
“Some students who were boycotting food, were telling others to follow suit. They caused violence at the school. We intervened and arrested 24 students but later in the evening we received a report that school property has been damaged,” explained Lucio.
Head teacher of the school, Stembridge Kumwenda estimated the damaged property to be worth over K15 million.
