A 31-year-old woman in South Africa appeared in court for killing her husband and two children by poisoning the food which she served for them.
The suspects is identified as Maphephi Alinah Mokwena from Free State and has been charged with three counts of murder and one attempted murder of another child aged 11 who survived.
“On Wednesday morning, June 22 2022, the deceased were served brown bean soup by Maria Mokwena before they went to school and work,” said Capt Phumelelo Dhlamini, the provincial police spokesperson.
While at school, the children reportedly complained of stomach pain and they were taken to hospital where they all died.
The same happened to their father who fell ill while at work and died after being taken to hospital too.
A post-mortem showed that the deaths were as a result of poison.
Upon interrogation, the mother admitted to have poisoned her family, leading to her immediate arrest.
The husband was aged 49 and the two children were 10 and 14.
