A 1-year-old baby has been hospitalized after being shot by mourners who fired guns while at cemetery.

The incident in Mpumalanga, South Africa is said to have happened on Saturday, July 10 afternoon whilst a funeral activity was being held at a cemetery which is close to the child’s home.

The girl child was playing outside when she suddenly got hit by the stray bullet.

“Gunshot sounds were reportedly heard coming from the nearby graveyard where there was a burial and moments later the child was heard screaming,” said police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

“When her mother rushed outside to find out… what was happening to her daughter, she noticed that the baby was bleeding on [sic] her lower body.

“The baby was then taken to a nearby clinic by a private vehicle and the medical staff confirmed that she had a gunshot wound on her leg, however, the child had to be swiftly transferred to hospital.”

Mdhluli said police have since opened a case of attempted murder and appealed to the public to help them with information that can lead to the capture of the culprits.
