Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentarians have obtained an injunction restraining one of their own who is also the legislator for Mulanje West Dr. George Chaponda from resuming the role of Leader of Opposition in parliament.
During a meeting held this weekend led by former President Peter Mutharika in Mangochi, Chaponda was chosen as leader of opposition, replacing Mulanje Central legislator Kondwani Nankhumwa; a development that some quarters of the party disagreed with.
Following that, DPP members who are part of Nankhumwa have obtained an injunction restraining Chaponda from assuming the position until an-inter party hearing which is scheduled for 7th July 2022 is held.
Lawyer for the MPs Wapona Kita has confirmed.
Kita argues that the election of Chaponda was in violation of the MPs political right to vote for a leader of opposition as the lawmakers were not invited.
The injunction granted by the High Court in Lilongwe means Kondwani Nankhumwa will remain as Leader of Opposition.
